Steel is often an excellent introduction to custom display base design. Strong and versatile, it can be used to create slender bases, supporting rods or more complex structures, while generally remaining more affordable than brass or a chrome finish.
Whether unfinished, painted or patinated, it can be very discreet or express a more contemporary character. Its excellent balance of strength, refinement and price makes it suitable for private customers, collectors and professionals alike.
For small objects and technically straightforward requests, we also offer an express display base service. This service makes it possible to quickly create a support using bases and materials available in our workshop.
A custom-made steel base created for you
The design process begins with an assessment of the object and the desired position: upright, tilted, placed on a base or held at a distance. We then determine the dimensions of the base, the position of the supporting points and the shape of the rods or clasps required.
The project is defined with you in our shop and workshop, before production is entrusted to skilled craftspeople based in the Île-de-France region. This arrangement enables us to meet a wide variety of requirements, from a unique piece to a series of display stands for a professional project.
The object is dropped off and collected from the Paris Saint-Ouen Flea Market. This allows us to check its balance directly and adjust the supporting system before the base is delivered.
Custom-made steel base for a Lurçat plate
For this Lurçat plate, we designed a steel display stand with a rectangular base and two supporting rods. Clasps positioned at their ends follow the contours of the plate, stabilising it without damaging it.
The black patina makes the structure particularly discreet and allows the decoration of the piece to take centre stage. Here, the display stand ensures both the stability of the plate and the clarity of its presentation.
Custom-made base for a horse-head sculpture
This sculpture could not be displayed upright without a suitable support. We therefore created a steel structure capable of stabilising it while visually extending its shape.
This type of piece can be described as a reconstructive support: the metal does more than support the work, as it also suggests the missing section. In this example, the line of the base reconstructs the horse’s neck and restores the sculpture to a coherent position.
Christ on a custom-made steel base with a speckled patina
The wooden cross originally associated with this figure of Christ had disappeared. Without it, the object no longer had a structure enabling it to remain upright and be displayed properly.
We designed a steel support with one section extending along the full length of the arms to provide consistent, balanced support. The speckled patina creates a nuanced finish that is less uniform than painted steel and complements the object’s antique character. The custom base therefore restores a stable display position without attempting to reproduce the original cross.
Custom-made steel bases ideal for shop counters
In a shop, a display base must highlight the product, withstand repeated handling and blend into the venue’s visual identity. Steel is particularly suitable for creating slender, strong displays for shoes, jewellery, keyrings and other manufactured objects.

Custom-made steel bases created for ghd
As part of a professional project, La Bulle also created custom-made steel display bases for ghd, the hair-styling appliance brand.
How should a steel base be cared for?
Care requirements depend on the applied finish, but light cleaning is generally sufficient. The aim is to remove dust and marks without scratching the surface or damaging the patina or protective coating on the steel.
- Dust the base using a soft, dry, non-abrasive cloth.
- For a persistent mark, use a very slightly damp cloth and then dry the surface immediately.
- Avoid abrasive sponges, acidic products, solvents and metal cleaners that have not been recommended.
- Do not allow water or moisture to remain on the base, rods or welding points.
- Do not apply oil, wax or varnish without knowing which finish is already present.
In a dry indoor environment, a properly protected steel base requires little maintenance. If signs of oxidation or damage to the patina appear, it is best to consult us before taking any action.
Comparing steel bases with other materials
The choice of material depends on the object’s weight, the desired refinement, the style of the presentation, the budget and the display location. When several materials each provide a useful quality, we can also create a mixed-material display base, for example by combining a wooden base with a steel or brass structure.
