Basing contemporary artworks,
La Bulle and Miguel Chevalier

"The beauty of things exists in the mind of him who contemplates them"
David Hume, Scottish Philosopher, 1771-1776
A great thinker of the Age of Enlightenment, for David Hume the very essence of Art in all its diversity, in all its forms, lies in its capacity to be shown. Paintings, sculptures, stage performances, visual arts, and so many others, could not be known, let alone appreciated, if they remained hidden from our eyes. Working on basing solutions with various museums, La Bulle is fully aware of the importance of choosing an adequate support in the scenography of a collection. Contemporary artist Miguel Chevalier honored us by entrusting us with the basing of some of his creations.
Let's take a closer look at his work and the technical imperatives his staging imposes.
When virtual art breaks
into reality
Essential works by Miguel Chevalier
A pioneering artist, Miguel Chevalier has been using computer tools in his artistic approach since the late 1970s. At the forefront of digital art, his virtual creations are exhibited in different forms. They are presented to us through screens and projections in which Miguel Chevalier's installations invite the viewer to interact with the work, thanks to technical processes diverted from their original purpose.
To better understand the challenges involved in a successful exhibition, here are three unique creations by the artist. Each, while being the fruit of computer creation, takes on its own specific form. Whether it remains virtual or truly exists, it needs a support that makes it accessible and human to us.
Oscillations (2021)

DISCOVER
This installation is very representative of the artist's work. Created by computer, the fantastic landscapes displayed on this giant 9m by 3m LED screen flow into each other to music by composer Michel Redolfi. We can see the technical complexity that the staging of such a work can require. Here there are no classic supports, no bases, no frames, but a modern system essential for the creation to live and be seen.
Ultra Nature,2008

DISCOVER
Installed in 2008 in the Sao Paulo metro during the exhibition Emoçaô Art.ficial 4.0, Ultra nature, 2008 is an autonomous and interactive computer performance. Beyond the pictorial beauty of this work in homage to Monet, this virtual green wall is composed of seeds that will germinate, grow, then wither and reproduce this cycle eternally. Interactive, presence sensors allow the plants inhabiting this garden to follow the movements of visitors.
Janus,2013

DISCOVER
Also resulting from a computer creation, this 1m by 1m by 1m sculpture was entirely shaped using a 3D printer. If its format seems more familiar to us from works exhibited in so-called classical museums, it is because Miguel Chevalier this time moved away from the prism of screens to bring this sculpture to life, in silica and resin.
Custom bases for
contemporary artworks
Digital artist Miguel Chevalier trusted us and allowed La Bulle to offer him custom basing solutions for some of his works.
The Concrétions that we put on bases are made by computer using autonomous random systems and then take shape thanks to 3D printing. They are then covered with phosphorescent paint in the dark.
We also have the chance to participate in the basing of various works present in different galleries around the world.
Whatever the format, we strive to offer the artist or gallerist the best custom solution to display the works entrusted to us.

Digital Abysses,2018
Mixing digital performance with 10 virtual works on giant screens, random computer-generated Concretions and a cabinet of curiosities exhibiting no less than forty new creations, this exhibition took Miguel Chevalier's abyssal dreamlike works from the banks of the Garonne to South Korea.
