How to Mount a Sculpture, Mask, or Plate? Custom Bases

Why Choose a Custom Base?

Base, mounting, mounting—in our art world, these are terms we hear very often. But are we able to define them well, to explain them well to you? Perhaps not.
Bases and pedestals for statues have always existed; they allow monumental works intended for the glory and prestige of emperors and other kings of France to be showcased. Even in antiquity, sculptures were displayed on bases.
But what about smaller sculptures, intended for interior display? How do you mount a heavy sculpture to present it in a living room or an art gallery?
The work is more subtle than for large monumental sculptures.
Indeed, many parameters need to be considered.
Choosing a custom base for your collectibles gives them undeniable added value; it means wanting to showcase them.
In a word, to elevate them.

By evolving towards mounting and creating bases for artworks and art objects, we have chosen to offer you the widest possible range of display stands and mounting solutions. Our goal is to democratize mounting. To ensure that any object can be presented at its true value. And very quickly we discovered that there are objects of monetary value, but also objects of sentimental value.

A multitude of custom base choices

To offer you even more choices, we adapt seamlessly to your desires and constraints.
When you visit our workshop store, many of you ask us, for example, how I can display my coco de mer? Or I have a collection of small art objects, how can I showcase them?
The work begins like this: we start with your request and propose a solution adapted to your budget and your desires, whatever the object you wish to present (with the exception of antique ivories).
A discussion begins; you make your choice of Plexiglas, steel, or brass base, and the choice of your patina, dark or raw.
Most of the time, it takes about two weeks to create a custom base, unless you opt for the express mounting service. In that case, and under certain conditions, your base can be made within the day.

Express mounting service: leave the same day
with your custom base

Our workshop store is a true Ali Baba's cave for art lovers. The flea market environment is conducive to discovery and foraging. Therefore, within our store, we have a certain number of materials that we use to create custom bases. These found materials are our foundation for offering you our express mounting service.
A small steel or brass rod to which a small Plexiglas base is added, and your base is almost finished. A very small hole in the object (not mandatory if you don't want it, we always find solutions) and your small sculpted head has found its base. Leave the same day with your small base.
This service is offered on weekends, whenever possible, for small objects.

The express mounting service is part of an eco-responsible approach to material recycling.

A Mounting Workshop in the Heart of Paris Saint-Ouen Flea Markets

The custom steel base allows you to display your objects elegantly and discreetly. This mounting solution is not showy and allows your object to be appreciated simply.
For you, this allows you to realize the power of a custom base. That is, the before-and-after mounting.
Before mounting, the object is often placed directly on a pedestal table or fireplace; after mounting, it rises in height and reveals all its beauty.
Very quickly, our store transformed into a true mounting workshop where you are most welcome.
Come and discover our different solutions, from the simplest steel mounting with a black patina to the most sophisticated brass mounting with a chrome patina, including the wooden base, the most natural solution.

The first time you decide to have an object mounted is a big step.

In general, we've told ourselves many times, "Oh, I should do something for this magnificent object that isn't showcased at all." We know we can do better, but we don't know where to start.
That's where we come in to give you some advice.

The wooden base, the most natural solution

Your decision is made; you decide to visit our workshop store at 23 bis rue Paul Bert in Saint-Ouen.
You preferably came with your object and have no idea how to present it.
This is the best mounting address in Paris.
Indeed, we will guide you in your decision-making.

Often, for a first mounting, we suggest custom steel mounting.
This is a first step into the world of mounting.
Indeed, steel mounting offers the best value for money in custom mounting.
Its creation is not too difficult, as steel is a relatively easy material to use and work with.
Custom steel mounting is ideal for presenting coco de mer, African masks, or plates.
If you're looking for a natural base finish, we recommend a wooden base.
A wooden base can be a simple raw wood square with a hole drilled in the center to insert a rod, allowing the mounting assembly to be built.
The choice of wood can vary from one base to another. Oak, beech, for example. Sometimes we have batches of more exotic wood, but this cannot be done on demand.

A wooden base can also be worked in its raw form by adding ogees.
These are small decorative steps at the base of the stand.
These ogees can be made directly in our workshop; do not hesitate to ask us for customisation of your bases.

And finally, the ultimate in wooden bases is the marouflaged wooden base.
We work with a textile artisan who creates exclusive and exceptional pieces.
Franck C marouflages the wooden base with antique fabrics or vintage wallpapers.
The result is quirky and striking.

This choice of base, we grant you, is quite bold, but it is a thoroughly delightful option. But you haven't seen everything yet.

We recommend custom raw wooden bases, with ogees or marouflaged, for sculptures with volume and movement, such as equestrian sculptures, angels, and cherubs, for example.

Consider brass: softer and more precious

The brass base is known for supporting your glass globe lamps, but in the world of mounting, it is above all the most luxurious solution.
Brass bases are very pleasant to work with because their formula is malleable.
This mounting solution allows for beautifully curved shapes, for example.
Furthermore, working with patinas is very interesting.
It is even more interesting to work with patinas on this type of base because their shapes allow for all kinds of fantasies.

Brass mounting can be described as luxury mounting; its price reflects the result, especially when one decides to chrome-plate it.

We recommend custom brass bases for exceptional pieces, even if ultimately all your works deserve a brass base.

Custom Plexiglas Base

And finally, here is our last option: the custom Plexiglas base.
By using this material, you truly pay homage to your object, as the Plexiglas completely disappears in favor of the object due to its transparency.
Most of the time, Plexiglas squares are used as bases onto which a rod is inserted.
The combination of a Plexiglas block and a brass rod works very well together.

In parallel with custom Plexiglas bases, we have developed a complete range of Plexiglas display stands to showcase all your collectibles, from masks to small spoons.
