Custom pedestals created for a series of Miguel Chevalier's Concretions
"The beauty of things exists in the mind of the beholder."
David Hume, Scottish Philosopher, 1771-1776
A great thinker of the Age of Enlightenment, David Hume believed that the very essence of Art in all its diversity and forms lies in its ability to be shown. Paintings, sculptures, scenic performances, plastic arts, and many others could not even be known, let alone appreciated, if they remained hidden from our eyes. By working on plinth solutions with various museums, La Bulle is fully aware of the importance of choosing an adequate support in the scenography of a collection. Contemporary artist Miguel Chevalier honored us by entrusting us with the plinths for some of his creations.
Let's take a closer look at his work and the technical imperatives his staging imposes.
When virtual art bursts into
reality
A pioneering artist, Miguel Chevalier has been using computer tools in his artistic approach since the late 1970s. At the forefront of digital art, his virtual creations are exhibited in various forms. Whether presented through screens and projections where Miguel Chevalier's installations invite the viewer to interact with the artwork, thanks to technical processes diverted from their original purpose.
Essential works by Miguel
Chevalier
To better understand the challenges involved in a successful exhibition, here are three unique creations by the artist. Each, while being the result of computer creation, takes on its own form. Whether it remains virtual or truly exists, it needs a support that makes it accessible and human to us.
Oscillations (2021)
This installation is very representative of the artist's work. Created by computer, the fantastic landscapes displayed on this giant 9m by 3m LED screen flow into and merge with each other to music by composer Michel Redolfi. The technical complexity that the staging of such a work can require is evident. Here, there are no classic supports, no plinths, no frames, but a modern system essential for the creation to live and be seen.
Ultra Nature,2008
Installed in 2008 in the Sao Paulo metro during the exhibition Emoçaô Art.ficial 4.0, Ultra Nature, 2008 is an autonomous and interactive computer performance. Beyond the pictorial beauty of this work, a tribute to Monet, this virtual plant wall is composed of seeds that will germinate, grow, then wither and repeat this cycle eternally. Interactive, presence sensors allow the plants inhabiting this garden to follow visitors' movements.
Janus,2013
Also created on a computer, this 1m x 1m x 1m sculpture was entirely fashioned using a 3D printer. If its format seems more familiar to us from works exhibited in so-called classical museums, it is because Miguel Chevalier has this time freed himself from the prism of screens to bring this sculpture to life in silica and resin.
Custom pedestals for
contemporary works
The digital artist, Miguel Chevalier, trusted us and allowed La Bulle to offer him custom plinth solutions for some of his works.
The Concretions that we placed on pedestals are made by computer using autonomous random systems, then take shape through 3D printing. They are then covered with phosphorescent paint in the dark.
We also have the chance to participate in the plinths of various works present in different galleries around the world.
Whatever the format, we strive to offer the artist or gallerist the best custom solution to showcase the works entrusted to us.
